Kellogg Community College remembers Dr. John Schwarz

The Kellogg Community College family was saddened by the news today that Dr. John J.H. Schwarz, one of KCC’s most loyal advocates and devoted fans, passed away at the age of 88.

KCC wouldn’t be where it is today without Schwarz, a Battle Creek native who was 19 when the original Battle Creek Community College was created. His legacy as a public servant and friend to education continues at KCC, where a facility bears his name and numerous Bruins have benefited from his generosity.

The Senator John J.H. Schwarz Science Building, located on the North Avenue campus in Battle Creek, was so named in 2002 based on the massive support he provided to KCC as a state senator and as a fierce advocate for higher education across Michigan.

As a member of the KCC Foundation Board of Directors since February 2003, Schwarz routinely made time for KCC, even while he was serving in the Michigan Senate, serving in the U.S. Congress, running for governor, advising presidential candidates and teaching at the University of Michigan.

A witty statesman with a delightful sense of humor, Schwarz shared astute observations, keen advice and measured political analysis that strengthened the College and the Foundation over many years. Schwarz remained on the KCCF board until his death.
