KCC’s spring Bruins Give Back events begin Feb. 21

Bruins Give Back participants serve during an event in February, 2013.

The first of three Bruins Give Back volunteer events of the semester will be held for Kellogg Community College students and employees from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 21.

Bruins Give Back is a collaborative program involving the College’s service learning area, Student Life office and HandsOn Battle Creek. Each date sees KCC students and employees volunteering at locations in and around Battle Creek.

Kate DeGraaf, service learning manager at KCC and coordinator of the Bruins Give Back program, said members of the KCC community volunteer to serve between 500 and 600 hours each year through the events, providing a value of more than $11,000 to community partners through their service.

“This is a great way for students to connect with community members as they learn,” DeGraaf said. “As each person serves a little, it is amazing to see the impact as we all come together.”

On Feb. 21, KCC students and employees will:

  • Assist students at Dudley STEM School as they work on butterfly projects.
  • Help clean, organize and set up for an event at Kingman Museum.

KCC students or employees who would like to participate in Bruins Give Back can sign up online at www.kellogg.edu/socialscience/servicelearning/projects.html. Organizations interested in partnering with KCC as part of the Bruins Give Back program can email DeGraaf at degraafk@kellogg.edu to express interest.

The Bruins Give Back events are just one of several community service initiatives hosted by the College. KCC’s biannual Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair, for another example, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the College’s North Avenue campus in Battle Creek.

Additionally, a service learning endorsement became a requirement for many KCC students pursuing an associate degree at KCC beginning in the fall of 2012, and students completed around 2,000 hours of service learning work during the fall 2013 semester alone.
