Kellogg Community College’s baseball team started conference play this weekend with a perfect 4-0 record, sweeping two doubleheaders against Mid Michigan College.

The team’s first home games were Saturday, March 23, when the Bruins bested Mid Michigan 15-2 and 17-4. The wins propelled KCC to what, as of this writing, is a seven-game winning streak.

Weather permitting, KCC’s next home game is 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30, against Lake Michigan Community College at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

Heading into the first game against Mid Michigan, KCC’s Head Baseball Coach Eric Laskovy said the Bruins just finished a “monster” preseason schedule that allowed the team to identify weaknesses and get ready for conference games.

“Now the focus on it is, we’re 0-0,” Laskovy, who is also a KCC physical education professor, said. “We’re heading into conference and we still believe we will compete for a conference championship. We still believe that we will compete to be in a regional – and be very competitive in a regional – with the chance to win it in the end. All of our goals are still in front of us.”

The Bruins finished last season as the runner-up in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XII Baseball Tournament and finished the season as Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference and State champions with an overall record of 45-8 and a conference record of 22-1.

Laskovy said the team’s pitching in particular has been strong so far.

“Derrick Edington, our 6-foot-8-inch pitcher from the U.P., is garnering a lot of attention right now,” Laskovy said of the sophomore from Pickford. “He’s off to fast start off the mound.”
