The Kellogg Community College baseball team had a mixed weekend, defeating Ivy Tech Community College 9-5 but falling to Cleary University 9-4.
Game 1: KCC 9, ITCC 5
KCC traveled to Defiance, Ohio, on Saturday, Feb. 22, to play Ivy Tech, coming home with a 9-5 victory.
Leading the Bruins from the mound were sophomores Connor Brawley and Chad Sommers, who each pitched four innings; Brawley gave up 0 runs while Sommers gave up 2. Freshman Brendan Shepherd pitched one inning with 0 runs.
From the plate, sophomore Connor Hnilo hit 3-5 and sophomore Adam Henderson hit 3-5 with 2 RBIs.
“A good Ivy Tech program tied the game in the eighth inning,” Head Baseball Coach Eric Laskovy said. “Proud of how we responded with 5 in the top of the ninth to seal the win. Sophomores Connor Hnilo, Adam Henderson and Connor Brawley all played very well.”
Game 2: Cleary 9, KCC 4
KCC traveled to Howell on Sunday, Feb. 23, ultimately falling 9-4 to Cleary University.
On the mound, freshman Ryan Vought pitched two innings with 0 earned runs and sophomore Jalen Mitchell pitched one.
“It was a opportunity to fine tune before our trip to Louisiana,” Laskovy said. “Unfortunately, several mental miscues cost us this one. Our coaching staff will do a better job of helping our team communicate and compete with energy and courage.”
The Bruins will take on No. 1 ranked and undefeated LSU Eunice this weekend, in what will be a major challenge for the Bruins. Games can be followed online at the LSU Eunice website or on the GameChanger app.
The results from this weekend bring the Bruins’ overall record for the season so far to 2-1; the team’s conference record is 0-0.
The KCC baseball team leaves this Thursday, Feb. 27, for their annual spring trip to Louisiana. Game times and locations are as follows:
- 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, versus LSU Eunice at LSU
- 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, versus LSU Eunice at LSU
- 1 p.m. Sunday, March 1, versus LSU Eunice at LSU
- 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at versus Baton Rouge Community College in Baton Rouge
