Kellogg Community College will host more than a dozen community organizations on campus in Battle Creek next week as part of the KCC service-learning initiative’s semi-annual Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, in the Student Center on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
Kate DeGraaf, service-learning manager at KCC, said the purpose of the fair is to connect KCC students and the public with volunteer and service opportunities to help fulfill needs across the communities served by the College.
“The Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair is a great way to meet representatives from community organizations and discover new ways to connect your passions with the needs in our community,” DeGraaf said. “Those who attend can become more aware of the variety of services and resources available in our community and of the many ways they can become involved.”
Each semester, KCC’s Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair offers students and others interested in community service and service-learning the opportunity to visit tables and displays set up by participating organizations serving in the Battle Creek area. Representatives from each organization are on hand to answer questions and provide information, and in many cases attendees have an opportunity to sign up for specific service or volunteer opportunities during the fair.
Community organizations participating in this semester’s fair include:
- Battle Creek Area Habitat for Humanity
- Battle Creek Bombers
- Big Brothers Big Sisters (with representatives from Barry and Calhoun counties)
- Boy Scouts of America
- Calhoun Community High School
- Calhoun Medical Care Facility
- Charitable Union
- Community Inclusive Recreation
- HandsOn Battle Creek
- Heartland Hospice
- Kingman Museum
- Marian E. Burch Adult Day Care Center
- New Level Sports Ministries
- Operation Christmas Child
- Operation Fit
- SAFE Place Shelter
- Second’s New Vision and Outreach Ministries
- SHARE Center
- SouthernCare Hospice
Many KCC students pursuing an associate degree at KCC are required to have a service-learning endorsement on their transcripts, and DeGraaf said the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Fair is a convenient way for students and organizations to connect to help students complete the projects required to earn their endorsement.
