Kellogg Community College is offering a new Summer Music & Theater Performance Camp for youth ages 10 through 18 this summer on campus in Battle Creek.

The camp will run from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 19 through 29, at the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave. The total cost for the two-week camp is $175.

The camp will culminate in a full presentation of the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” featuring camp participants at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 29, at KCC’s Binda Performing Arts Center.

KCC’s Arts and Communication Department is launching the new camp experience in partnership with the College’s Bruin Youth Programming initiative and Lifelong Learning Department, with a focus on connecting area youth interested in the performing arts with real experiences related to education and careers through music and theatre exploration.

Dr. Gerald Blanchard, director of choral activities and music area coordinator at KCC, said the camp will provide participants an opportunity to develop their musical and theatrical skills through hands-on experience. Students will be coached by college music and theatre instructors on a variety of relevant topics, including group dynamics, mime, creative thinking, creative movement, acting for singers, theatre games, improvisation, vocal health, singing technique, basic music theory, aural development, solo and ensemble performance, and much more.

“Students will have the opportunity to engage fully in every aspect of performance and explore their own voice and vision while experiencing the art of collaboration as an ensemble participant,” Blanchard said.

Participants will have the opportunity participate in large- and small-scale group activities, as well as private individualized lessons, Blanchard said, all while working directly with KCC’s outstanding, internationally recognized artist teaching faculty.

For participants interested in attending the camp who need financial assistance, Miller Foundation BCreative scholarships are available that can help qualified applicants cover up to 50 percent of the cost of a creative arts camp like this one.
