The Center for Diversity and Innovation at Kellogg Community College is hosting an overnight youth retreat for high schoolers interested in issues related to social justice.
The CDI’s LIT for Social Justice youth retreat is open to youth entering ninth through 12th grade and will begin with dinner and a screening of the movie “The Hunger Games” from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at First Congregational Church, 145 Capital Ave. NE, Battle Creek. The film will be used as a lens through which retreat participants will critically examine social justice themes in our own society and learn how to take productive action in support of social justice initiatives.
An overnight retreat will follow the film screening on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 21 and 22, at the Sherman Lake YMCA in Augusta, with camper travel provided from KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
Retreat activities will include workshops, breakout sessions and team-building activities focused on topics including social segregation, power and privilege, identity, resistance and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in activities including basketball, canoeing, swimming, volleyball, a campfire and activities related to the viewing of the solar eclipse on Aug. 21.
