A painter’s floral and still life images will offer a serene escape when “A Celebration of Light and Color: Watercolor Paintings by Janice Garrett” opens next week at Kellogg Community College.
The exhibit, which opens Monday, will run through Feb. 16 at the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in KCC’s Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center, on campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. The exhibit is free and open to the public for viewing during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
An opening reception for the exhibit, also free and open to the public, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25.
Garrett’s exhibit includes watercolor paintings, many large in scale, including images of Michigan landscapes. In an artist statement, Garret said she works from her own reference photographs to capture those perfect moments in time when light hits a subject just right.
“I find myself drawn to the little things, like the way sunlight comes through a backlit flower or a still life I’ve arranged with interesting color reflections and shadows,” Garrett said. “These little things are incredibly satisfying to paint and I enjoy the challenges of watercolor.”
Garret is a former KCC student who went on to graduate from Western Michigan University with a degree in art education before earning a master’s degree in studio art from Eastern Michigan University. She taught art for 19 years in the Kalamazoo Public Schools system.
