Kellogg Community College’s next art exhibit, “Consider the Trees,” will present multimedia works that bring nature into focus.
The exhibit, by artist and former KCC art instructor Martin Hubbard, will run March 5 to 29 at the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek. The exhibit is free and open to the public for viewing during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
An opening reception, which is also free and open to the public, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. March 8 at the gallery.
Hubbard has produced photographs, paintings and woodcuts of trees, showcasing the beauty, mystery and majesty of that which makes life both enjoyable and possible.
“The subjects that intrigue me tend to range from landscape to human effect upon the environment,” Hubbard said. “I enjoy and search for quiet beauty in the woodland, stream or lake as well as the creativity, craftsmanship, good design, bad design, kitsch, irony and hypocrisy of our bustling, man-made world.”
Inspired by Peter Wohlleben’s book “The Hidden Life of Trees,” Hubbard collected pieces he’s made over the last 30 years to exhibit.
The Battle Creek artist studied at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Indiana University, as well as abroad through a Fulbright Scholarship in Holland and Belgium. He taught at KCC for 30 years.
