Kellogg Community College’s women’s volleyball team went 1-3 at the Raider Challenge invitational in Grand Rapids on Saturday.

St. Clair Community College 3, KCC 2
KCC opened invitational play with a close, hard-fought match against St. Clair Community College that went a full five sets. KCC took the first two sets 25-17 and 25-21, respectively, but St. Clair won the final three 25-21, 32-30 and 15-13.
Freshman Gabby Costello (Olivet/Bellevue High School) had 3 kills, 21 digs and 2 aces; sophomore Madison Jones (Hillsdale/Hillsdale High School) had 54 assists, 18 digs and 1 ace; and sophomore Madison Ducheney (Marshall/Marshall High School) and freshman Grace Hall (Battle Creek/Pennfield High School) each had 24 kills.
KCC’s Head Women’s Volleyball Coach Tom VanWienen said the team played a great match from beginning to end that might have been its best all year.
“Learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to play in tight matches and what it will take to win them instead of coming up short,” VanWienen said. “Great learning match for us to draw from.”
Oakland Community College 3, KCC 0
KCC fell in three sets to Oakland Community College, with scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-12, respectively.
Freshman Rebecca French (Sturgis/Sturgis High School) had 4 kills and 1 block and sophomore Abigail Howard (Delton/Delton Kellogg High School) had 3 kills, 1 solo block and 2 block assists.
KCC 3, Henry Ford Community College 0
The Bruins defeated Henry Ford Community College in three sets, with scores of 25-7, 25-13 and 25-16, respectively.
Freshman Haidyn Markos (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School) had 10 digs and 3 aces; freshman La’Angel Eubanks (Flint/Carmen-Ainsworth High School) had 8 kills and 1 block; Hall had 12 kills; and Howard had 4 kills.
“Was nice for the ladies to get a win here,” VanWienen said. “Came out from the beginning of the match and set a tone and really did good job of playing within system.”
Mott Community College 3, KCC 0
KCC fell in three sets to Mott Community College, with scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 25-19, respectively.
Jones had 26 assists, 9 digs and 3 aces; freshman Erika Knieper had 6 kills, 4 aces, 2 digs and 1 block; and Ducheney had 8 kills and 3 digs.
“Ended our weekend playing a very good and fast MCC team,” VanWienen said. “Thought we played them tough and could see some areas that we had improved on from the previous matches. Ladies did a nice job of working together. Again, another very tight match that we are on the edge of closing out for the wins. Just searching for that one to two points a game that we need to improve on. It was a good weekend of volleyball for the Lady Bruins!”

The latest match results bring the Bruins’ conference record for the season so far to 2-6; the team’s overall record is 6-10.
KCC’s road schedule continues this week with a pair of conference away matches, the next starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, against Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana. The team’s next home match starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, against Muskegon Community College in the Miller Gym.
