Kellogg Community College recognized two dozen student artists with awards last week during a virtual reception honoring outstanding work exhibited as part of the College’s Annual Student Art Exhibition.
The exhibit, featuring 97 works from nearly four dozen student artists, was displayed at the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in KCC’s Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center through April 30 and can be viewed online at rosep9.wixsite.com/kccstudentartexhibit.
Every spring, KCC Art, Photography and Multimedia and Graphic Design program students from the current academic year are invited to submit up to four entries for consideration for Student Art Exhibition awards. A faculty committee reviews and organizes all submissions and the bulk of the work is juried independently by an art professional chosen from outside of the College. The juror (or jurors) selects the major media category awards and honorable mentions, with cash prizes made possible through a generous donation made to the KCC Foundation by artist Kimiko Petersen and her husband Sherman Petersen.
Awards listed below include these Kimiko Petersen Fine Art Awards – including Best of Show ($250), Best of Media ($100) and Honorable Mention awards ($50 each) distributed across categories at the juror’s discretion – as well as Arts and Communication Departmental Awards, Mosaic Entry Recognition Awards and scholarships.
Kimiko Petersen Fine Art Award winners this year were selected by jurors Tim Norris and Patricia Opel, longtime Michigan artists and educators who have exhibited widely throughout the state and nationally since the 1980s. Their work has appeared recently at the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City; the Alden B. Dow Museum in Midland; and the Muskegon Museum of Art. They taught studio and art history courses at Muskegon Community College from 1996 to 2020 and currently own and operate Kook’s Eye Gallery in Pentwater.
In their juror’s statement for the exhibition, Norris and Opel said they relied on their 40 years of experience as artists and teachers and their knowledge of art history to make their selections.
“Our selections of the award winners represent what we consider to be the most skillful matches of form to content among the submissions,” the jurors said. “These pieces display exceptional techniques and powerful compositions that convey intriguing messages. Congratulations to all the artists. It has been a challenging year for all of us and we wish you the best in your artistic pursuits.”
