The Kellogg Community College women’s soccer team faced stiff competition this weekend, falling 4-0 to Schoolcraft College on the road in Livonia.
Head Soccer Coach Levi Butcher said the game “was a difficult one in a number of ways,” including 90-plus degree heat and an opponent that was able to field twice as many players as the Bruins.
“Our ladies pushed though a very poor start today, letting up all four goals in the first 48 minutes of the match, to finish strong,” Butcher said. “The entire team seemed to get the halftime message we tried to send, which was to believe in their ability and possess the ball in addition to adding some toughness and physicality to our play. We showed confidence, a bit of fire, and some possessive quality in the second half that were not there in the first. We are still young, and we learned from some mistakes early on that we hope teach us a few lessons going into next Wednesday’s clash with Jackson.”
Freshman goalkeeper Maya Ruelas (Kalamazoo/Home School, pictured above) had her work cut out for her, grabbing 23 saves from 27 shots on goal.
“Maya Ruelas was very good in net for us today, and made numerous interventions on crosses and through balls in addition to her 23 saves,” Butcher said. “Captain Chloe Leugers (Marshall/Marshall High School) filled in at center back today and earned Player of the Game honors for her effort.”
