KCC cross country teams seeing early season success

KCC's 2025-26 men's and women's cross country teams.

The Kellogg Community College men’s and women’s cross country teams are seeing early success straight out the gate after opening their seasons in August.

The women’s team entered the season ranked second in the nation and the men’s team entered ranked fifth in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s preseason poll, released Aug. 27. The same day, the women’s team and men’s sophomore runner Julian Borst qualified for the National Championship race in November in the Bruins’ first competition of the season.

The results from the latter race led Borst and women’s freshman Alicyn Gleesing to be selected as National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Men’s and Women’s National Runners of the Week, respectively – honors awarded to just one runner in the division per week across the country.

The teams – led again by Head Cross Country Coach Tom Shaw and joined by assistant coaches Gale Fisher, Rob Lillie and Becky Pryor – have three more races before the regional meet Oct. 24. Information about each team follows.

Men’s Cross Country

KCC’s 2025-26 men’s cross country runners include:

  • Freshman Jonah Bills (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School)
  • Sophomore Julian Borst (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix High School)
  • Freshman Landon Bouchard (Galesburg/Galesburg-Augusta High School)
  • Freshman Nicholas Cabrera (Portage/Portage Central High School)
  • Sophomore Carson Lenzinger (Richland/Gull Lake High School)
  • Freshman Ezra McCarty (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School)
  • Freshman Cameron McKee (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School)
  • Freshman Eliott Ormsby (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School)
  • Freshman Zach Regis (Hickory Corners/Gull Lake High School)
  • Freshman Adrian Sanglyen (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School)
  • Freshman Carter Stevens (Augusta/Galesburg-Augusta High School)

The Bruins opened the season this year as defending regional champions and coming off a fifth-place finish in nationals in 2024. Individually, Borst last year was the NJCAA Region 12 Division III regional champion and finished sixth in the nation at nationals, earning NJCAA Division III Second Team All-American honors. In October he broke the school record with a time 45 seconds faster than the second-best time in program history.

“The men’s team is ready for a big jump from their fifth-place finish nationally last season,” Head Coach Shaw said. “Our team goals are lofty, and the key is to work hard, keep focused and stay healthy. Our depth allows us to be hopeful, and so far the men’s team is hungry for success.”

Women’s Cross Country

KCC’s 2025-26 women’s cross country runners include:

  • Sophomore Chloe Badger (East Leroy/Athens High School)
  • Sophomore Olivia Butler (Homer/Homer High School)
  • Freshman Alicyn Gleesing (Plainwell/Gull Lake High School)
  • Freshman Elayna Guadamuz (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School)
  • Freshman Jenna Lumsden (Marshall/Marshall High School)
  • Freshman Emma Taggett (Kalamazoo/Plainwell High School)

The women’s team also opened the season as defending regional champions, ultimately finishing seventh in nationals in 2024.

“KCC continues to improve as a team year after year,” Shaw said. “The caliber and depth of the incoming runners will allow us to have the talent to improve from the seventh-place team finish nationally last season. So far, the team is bonding and working hard and I think we are set up to have a great year with our women’s team.”
