The Branch County Community Chorus of Kellogg Community College will present its annual “Sounds of the Season” holiday concert Dec. 7 in Coldwater.
The concert will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 27 E. Chicago St. The event is free and open to the public, though a freewill offering will be collected to support future KCC music initiatives.
This year’s program includes an opportunity for the audience to join the BCCC in singing beloved holiday carols, culminating in a community rendition of the “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s “Messiah.” The afternoon will be conducted by Dr. Gerald J. Case-Blanchard, director of Vocal Music and Music Area coordinator at KCC, with collaborative pianist Nancy D. Brown.
The first half of the concert program features a diverse selection of choral literature, including the serene Renaissance lullaby “Xicochi” by Gaspar Fernandes and an engaging musical setting of the classic “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clarke Moore, arranged by Harry Simeone. The program offers a rich blend of styles to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.
The second portion of the concert will highlight additional classical holiday selections performed by the BCCC and the KCC Choral Union and will feature KCC instrumental faculty artist Brendan McEvoy on violin. The afternoon will conclude with four celebrated choruses from Handel’s “Messiah”:
- “And the Glory of the Lord”
- “O Thou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion”
- “For Unto Us a Child Is Born”
- “Hallelujah”
Audience members are encouraged to bring their own score of “Messiah” to join the chorus in singing the rousing finale.
“This event is open to all, whether you wish to raise your voice in song during the caroling portion or simply enjoy the joyful music of the season,” Case-Blanchard said.
A festive cookie and punch reception will follow the performance in the St. Mark’s fellowship hall, where a surprise appearance by a certain jolly holiday visitor may delight the younger guests.
