Bruin Bookstore collecting used shoes for donation, recycling through April 30; annual Spring Sale runs through May 11

Several pairs of shoes stacked in boxes in the bookstore.

Kellogg Community College’s Bruin Bookstore is again collecting gently used athletic shoes for donation and worn out athletic shoes to recycle as part of a Sneaker Collection campaign, running through Thursday, April 30.

The bookstore, located on the first floor of the Lane-Thomas Memorial Building on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek, will accept the shoes during regular business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays.

The shoes are donated to the Charitable Union in Battle Creek, which distributes shoes in decent shape for reuse and sends shoes in rougher shape to zero-waste sneaker recycling company GotSneakers.

The bookstore’s annual Sneaker Collection event has collected more than 1,200 pairs of gently worn shoes for donation and unusable pairs for recycling over the past dozen years. It’s one of many community collections undertaken at the Bruin Bookstore each year, which include an annual Hoodies for the Homeless shirts and coats collection each fall semester. An eyeglasses collection held each March since 2016 at the bookstore has resulted in several hundred pairs of used eyeglasses collected for donation and recycling through the Lions Club Recycle for Sight program.

The Sneaker Collection initiative also corresponds with the Bruin Bookstore’s annual Spring Sale, running through Monday, May 11, during which all KCC clothing and gift items are 20% off. (KCC employees get an additional 10% off through their employee discount, for a full 30% off.)
