The Kellogg Singers from Kellogg Community College will perform as the featured choral group during the morning worship service beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 17, at Wakeshma Community Church, 16732 E. UV Ave., Fulton.
Dr. Gerald Blanchard, a vocal music professor at KCC and director of the choir, said the group will present several sacred musical selections during the service, including:
- “I Will Arise,” by Kenneth Dake, which Blanchard called, “A lively a capella composition. This particular work is a wonderful setting of the tune ‘Restoration’ by William Walker.”
- “Gather by the River to Pray,” by Pepper Choplin. “This work combines the two traditional hymn tunes – ‘Shall We Gather at the River’ and ‘Down to the River to Pray’ – in a most creative way,” Blanchard said
- “Oh Mary, Don’t You Weep, Don’t You Mourn,” arranged by Moses Hogan. “This spiritual is full of rhythmic energy and excitement,” Blanchard said. “The highlight will be the call and response between the tenor soloist and the chorus.”
The Kellogg Singers’ appearance at Wakeshma Community Church serves as a community outreach project for the choir as well as a prelude to the Kellogg Community College Choral Union’s annual spring musical, “Singing in the Spring 2013: I, Too, Sing America!” scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at First Presbyterian Church, 111 Capital Ave. NE, Battle Creek.
The April event will be a celebration of American music through song, poetry and jazz and will feature several faculty artists, a reading by poet and KCC English professor Dr. Elizabeth Kerlikowske and a lecture from KCC history professor Dr. Ray DeBruler in addition to performances by the Choral Union and the KCC Jazz Band.
