The Kellogg Community College baseball team dominated the field Wednesday with a 19-6 win over Ivy Tech Community College.
The Bruins took the victory from the Titans in a single nine-inning game on the road in Fort Wayne.
Freshman pitcher Ryan Vought (Battle Creek/Pennfield High School) led the Bruins from the mound, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out three with zero runs. Freshman Ben Hubert (Komoka, Ontario/Medway High School) pitched 1.2 innings with zero hits or runs, while freshman Ashton Potts (Sterling Heights/Stevenson High School) pitched 1.1 with zero runs.
KCC had an impressive day at the plate led by sophomore infielder Connor Hnilo (Caledonia/Caledonia High School), hitting 4-4 with six RBIs. Freshman outfielder Kyle VanLiere (Mattawan/Mattawan High School) hit 4-5, including three triples, and freshman outfielder Tate Peterson (Grandville/Grandville High School) hit 4-6 with two RBIs.
“Carter Woody started and did a nice job keeping us in the game as defensive miscues put us in an early deficit,” Head KCC Baseball Coach Eric Laskovy said. “Ryan Vought, Zach Marshall and Ben Hubert were fantastic as our pitching staff issued just one walk while striking out six.
“Connor Hnilo, Kyle VanLiere and Tate Peterson all had huge games at the plate pacing our offensive attack. Great to see our team resilient and battling for nine full innings.”
As of this writing, the Bruins next take the field Monday, March 8, for the first home game of the season at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, where they’ll take on the Monarchs of Macomb Community College. All home games are free and open to the public.
