Kellogg Community College in July was recognized by the Battle Creek City Commission with a Beautiful Battle Creek Award for the College’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing the beauty of its North Avenue campus in Battle Creek.
Beautiful Battle Creek Awards are presented monthly to area residents and businesses in recognition of their efforts to improve their neighborhood and community through property maintenance and beautification. The award is a public recognition that celebrates those who take care of their property and encourages others to do the same.
Recipients are nominated by local Neighborhood Planning Councils and are announced at the second City Commission meeting each month.
According to the City of Battle Creek, “These good neighbors and businesses act as examples to others in contributing to the communitywide goal of improving the appearance of neighborhoods and the quality of life for Battle Creek’s citizens.”
KCC’s award was presented to Vice President for Student Affairs Terah Zaremba by Battle Creek Mayor Mark Behnke and fellow commissioners during the group’s regular meeting July 21.
Zaremba said in her acceptance remarks that employees and students take great pride in the College’s North Avenue campus, noting the College’s Art on Campus Committee and Infrastructure, Sustainability and Planning Council as just two of several College initiatives that take campus beautification into account when approaching new projects.
“One of the coolest things that make me proud is that our students weigh in, as well,” Zaremba said. “Most recently, we had some students bring forward a request to beautify a particular part of campus that makes what they call a third space, and so we approved that, we beautified that part of campus.
“Having our students weigh in is really meaningful for us, and I think it demonstrates how much pride we put into our campus.”
The Beautiful Battle Creek Award is just the latest of a number of honors and awards received by the College, which include recognition as an official Tree Campus Higher Education for the third consecutive year by the Arbor Day Foundation. This designation recognizes institutions for meeting specific standards demonstrating and promoting a commitment to environmental leadership, urban forestry and community resilience.
KCC is one of just two community colleges and eight total higher-ed institutions statewide with the Tree Campus designation.
Fall Classes Begin Aug. 24
Registration is open now for fall classes at KCC, the first of which begin Aug. 24. Student registration information, including links to registration instructions, policies, tuition and fees and other information, is available online at kellogg.edu/registration.
New this fall, an application deadline is required for all students interested in taking fall classes. All individuals who haven’t applied to the College via the free online application at kellogg.edu/apply MUST apply by the new application deadline of Friday, Aug. 14, in order to take classes this fall.
