Freshman lefty Keith Phillips pitched a no-hitter leading the Kellogg Community College Bruins to a 22-0 game one victory that was part of a two-game sweep of Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Kalamazoo on Tuesday.
The wins further cement the Bruins place at the top spot in their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Conference, bringing their record to 14-2 for the season so far and extending their current winning streak to eight games.
Batting leaders for the Bruins in game one included sophomore outfielder Jake Miller, who had four hits including a home run and five RBIs. Sophomore first baseman/outfielder Kody Carson also had four hits, including a double and two RBIs.
Pitching for the Bruins in game two’s 8-3 victory were right-handed sophomore Jacob Wakeland, who pitched three innings and struck out two, and right-handed freshman Kyle Smith, who pitched four innings for the win and struck out one.
At the plate in game two, sophomore catcher Patrick Bobolts and sophomore infielder Trent Pell each hit two, with Bobolts hitting a double and adding two RBIs and Pell adding three RBIs.
The Bruins play next beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday in a non-conference double header against the JV team from Davenport University. The games will be played at the Bruins’ home field at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.
