Kellogg Community College this fall for the first time is offering Computer-Aided Drafting and Design instruction at the College’s Eastern Academic Center campus in Albion.

Computer-aided drafting and design (CAD) is the process of creating drawings or models that define a given product before it is ready to be manufactured. The drafter/designer is a key link in the engineering design process, documenting concepts using models and detailed drawings so products can move through manufacturing and production.

CAD programming at the EAC this fall consists of the four-credit DRAF 101: Engineering Graphics, the foundational course for students interested in pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Technology. The course begins Tuesday, Sept. 2, and runs from 6 to 9:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Thursday, Dec. 11.

DRAF 101: Engineering Graphics offers new CAD students training and practice in the graphical communication principles used in the CAD industry. Topics covered include technical sketching, lettering, geometric constructions, multi-view drawings, sectional views, auxiliary views, dimensioning practices and drawing notation.

The class will be held in the EAC’s brand-new CAD Lab (pictured above), fully stocked with the latest CAD hardware and software provided via grant funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

EAC Director Chrissy Pfeil said the College is thrilled to bring CAD instruction to the Albion campus for the first time.

“With our new state-of-the-art CAD Lab and industry-standard software, students in Albion can now gain the hands-on skills they need to enter the field or continue on to an advanced degree, all without having to travel far from home,” Pfeil said. “This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in turning their ideas into real-world designs.”

KCC’s Eastern Academic Center is located at 14055 26 Mile Road in Albion, just off of I-94. The nearly 20,000-square-foot facility first opened in 2001. The EAC offers classrooms, a computer lab, a student lounge and more. A recently completed $1.75 million upgrade at the facility added a new CNA Lab and new welding and mechatronics labs, in addition to the new CAD Lab. The center also offers free parking and free Wi-Fi.
